Old Key West?

Hello,

We've booked a two-bedroom villa at Old Key West this January. We've never stayed there before.

We generally stay at the Beach Club, but we didn't plan on swimming in January. Can anyone tell me if they've liked Old Key West? What we're most worried about is how well the transportation works form there, but we are interested in hearing about it in general. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Old Key West?

My Dfamily loved the 2-bedroom villa we stayed in years ago. I was deathly sick and only remember a few things - the whirlpool, my bed.

I do remember the calmness - there was hardly any noise even though we were there in August. I loved the laundry - it is so nice not to lug things to a pool. It was wonderful having the entire family in one place. My FIL was with us so he shared the one bedroom with my Dsons and DD had the living room sofa bed. It was nice sitting around having drinks and spending time together even though we were exhausted from parks and me from being sick. The low-key decor helped with this. It helped you relax and settle in.

Re: Old Key West?

We love OKW there were 8 of us and we had plenty of room.
We stayed in building 62, it is close to everything. The only drawback is you have to take a bus to all the parks. The boats only goes to DTD. Have fun

Re: Old Key West?

If you like quiet and laid back you'll love it! That's our DVC home resort, and although we've stayed at other resorts - POFC, WL, Poly, BW, and CS, we really like it there the best. First, there's not the "hotel" feel that you get with the other resorts - no long hallways lined with rooms. It's very spread out, so there's not a lot of congregational hanging out, aside from the pool and Hospitality house area. The theme is great. You will get the occasional golfer coming by, as the resort is on the Lake Buena Vista course. One year, DH sat on the porch and watched what was then the National Car Rental PGA event play the week we were there.

Transportation isn't too bad - there are 5 stops in the resort, but you won't have to share your bus with any other resorts. You can bus or boat to DTD. We have had some waits for busses there, but then again, we've had long waits for busses at other resorts as well. If your building is a long way from the Hospitality House, you can catch a bus at the nearest stop, and ride up to the front, if you need to go up there for anything. HH is the last stop, and I believe the first also, for DTD busses.

It's very nice having a full kitchen, as we can eat "in" in the mornings, and sometimes will come "home" in the afternoons to catch a quick lunch and a nap. Olivia's, the sit-down restaurant is very good - I've not found much there I don't like, and we make it part of our plan to eat there at least once per trip.

Hope this helps, if you have other any questions feel free to message me or ask on the post!! I'll attach a photo or two we've taken!

Re: Old Key West?

What's not to love about OKW?

It is quiet, the theming is great, the colors are very relaxing. The resort is spread out but not overwhelming. If you are driving or renting a car, you can park right outside your villa. The bus service is good, and it's nice not having to share with another resort. The pool is recently refurbed if it does get warm enough for swimming! Olivia's has awesome coconut shrimp and great breakfasts. The rooms are larger than any other DVC resort, too.

We love OKW, you will too!!!

Re: Old Key West?

We loved our 2-bedroom @ OKW! It was nice to have a laundry room at our place so we didn't have to walk far to wash clothes. Our unit was HUGE! We usually stay at Yacht or Beach Club b/c we love the location but they were booked so we were able to get OKW. Now after staying there I love it and wouldn't hesitate staying there again. Have fun!

Re: Old Key West?

We stayed there on our first trip to WDW!
The only problem we had was transportation, and that was 10 yrs. ago. I have heard from quite a few that it has improved greatly. The problem we had was that the handicapped buses only came by every hour or so. Not a problem if all are okay.

We had a 2 bedrooom, and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it. quiet, nice, spacious, and 2 count them 2, bathrooms!!!!!!!

The maid came in every day and put all the dishes in the dishwasher. I thought I was losing my mind, every day, we would drink some milk in the AM, and in the PM, the dishes were gone. took me 4 days to figure out where they were going.

Have a great time.

Re: Old Key West?

Our best trip ever was at OKW...it was wonderful and SO incredibly spacious...you wouldn't believe. On that trip we had my infant daughter, my 2 year old son, my mom and MIL, and my husband and I. We got the two bedroom... the grandmas shared a room and had a pack in play in that room for my 2 year old to sleep in... We had another pack-n-play in our bedroom for the baby (mainly because I'm a breastfeeding mom and that was easiest with a 3 month old).

There is a pull out sofa in the living room two that sleeps more people.

It was SUPER nice to have laundry facilities--we packed FAR less. The whirlpool tub in the master bath was great. The extra bathroom was wonderful.

We got an AP rate that year that was wonderful. It was super nice. I liked it very well and would stay there again if I had a large party and the AP rate so I could afford it!

We did rent a car while there...but we used bus transportation as well...and found it to be fine. It was also close to DTD which was nice.

I thought it was great...but I've never stayed at BC.

Re: Old Key West?

We stayed there last March 2004. It was awesome. Be sure to look at the map and look at the bus stops and where stuff is located and how you want to pick your building. The rooms are huge and it is so convenient to have a kitchen and sitting area. I think you'll just love it. We also went swimming in March when we are there...and the laundry was right next to the pool...so I was able to do laundry down by the pool...while my DD swam. There was also great hot tubs to relax sore muscles in! Enjoy...I'm so jealous!

Re: Old Key West?

We LOVE OKW! It has been our home resort since 1991, when we were among the first DVC members. Earlier I wrote a very long reply all about OKW in the DVC forum, under a question about OKW. This should give you some descriptions and ideas of what buildings you should request. Hope this helps!

Re: Old Key West?

Hi,
My parents, DH and I stayed in a 2 bedroom at OKW last October. This was the first DVC trip. Here is a recap:

The pros:
whole kitchen right there
whirlpool tub in master bath
laundry in room
balcony
could rent water recreation at their dock
boat to DTD

The cons:
no real counter service facilities on property
had a problem with the ice maker in freezer and blender that took a little while to get cleared up

The ehhhh:
bus stops (numerous, but only serviced OKW, and we were lucky to have one fairly close to the room)

However, remember this is coming from a couple who have stayed at value resorts with no problems at all. We're easy to please. My parents even offered us points for this year and we decided to go on our own and stay somewhere with counter service. Yeah, I know, we're staying at WL, with not great counter service, but I have to use my discount to our advantage
Would we do it again? If my parents were feeling generous LOL

I'm sure you'll love it! Have a great time!
