Do you own a credit card? ....... I don't and I don't want one, all I wanted was a debit card. I recently asked my bank (Lloyds Bank) if I could apply for a debit card and they said : , because my salary is paid by cheque and not straight into my bank account!!! I said I have been banking with them for over 20 years, never had any thing on credit and didn't own a credit card but they still said . So, I went and opened a new account (HSBC Bank) and they said with my credit history, I would be a perfect candidate gave me a Debit Card! A few day's later I went back to the Lloyds to withdraw some money and they had to the cheek to say to me, Oh Mrs Carroll, you do know you can apply for a credit card - I said I DON'T WANT A CREDIT CARD, all I wanted was a DEBIT CARD and you would't give me one. I always think to myself if I don't have the money, I can't afford to have it and would rather not be up to my eyeballs in debt. If I need anything DH put's it on his card and I give him the money instead. Why do bank's want to put people into debt offering them cards they don't want.
Banks do that so they can get richer! I am getting back at the banks this year though! I am using a credit card like a debit card. Buying what I normally would with my debit card, then putting the money from my checking account into a savings as soon as I get home (I have online banking) I pay the credit card off before the end of the month so they get NO interest from me!!! But I still earn points towards my airline ticket!
Don't talk to me about banks! Honestly, I can't understand how with today's modern technology, it still takes three to four working days to clear funds between different banks. Unfortunately it is all about them making as much money as possible, that's the problem.

We own one credit card that we put all our purchases on and at the end of the month we pay it off completely. We feel the same -- the banks are not going to get rich off of our backs by charging us outrageous interest rates. We earn air miles by using the card and it's a great way for us to be able to afford to travel.
I don't mind so much when the teller at the bank asks me if I would like a credit card - they are forced to because they actually have a quota they have to make. She probably doesn't want to ask me any more than I want to apply for one, but if she wants her paycheque..... What bothers me is the telemarketing phone calls from Capital One, Bank of Montreal and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Every month. One time DH got a call from Capital One telling him he was pre-qualified for a $50,000 card. (As if!! ) He decided to have a little fun with the guy and started whooping all excitedly yelling that he "won $50,000!!!" The poor guy kept stammering that it was an offer for a credit card, but DH kept going on about how he "won $50,000". Eventually the telemarketer hung up on him!

I know, it's a nightmare, I put my cheque in on Saturday Dec 22nd, and it didn't "clear" until Thursday Jan 3rd!!.
We pay our credit card off every month. Glad that you decided to take your banking business elsewhere as Lloyd's apparently didn't care too much to make you, their customer, happy.
Ugh, I get tired of credit card offers, too. Telemarketers are the worst! It does work in your favor credit score wise to have at least one card that you keep in good standing, so I have a Disney Visa. I use it for everything and pay off weekly to build points, and get the member discounts in the parks or when they offer member discount codes. I have one other credit card that carries a very low interest rate and a large credit limit that I keep in case I ever need to make a big purchase in an emergency - never had to use it, hope I never do, but nice to know it's there.

The reason the banks try to give you a credit card - in one word - INTEREST!!! MOST people so not pay off their balance each month -- and hence the bank gets all of those interest charges - free money to them! That is why. I can not believe your bank would not give you a debit card - yo showed them - changed bank!!!

I could not beleive that your bank would not give you a debit card....I must be slow becuase I thought that it was standard practice that banks gave you a debit card tht was linked to your checking....I had never even heard of not being able to get a debit card.
Glad you made the change and found a bank that could give you what you wanted....
