As some of you may remember, I am attending graduate school at a large private Catholic university in the area. I think there are something like 10,000+ students who attend the school. Well for J-term I am taking a counseling class that has perhaps 20 people in it. The professor randomly assigned everyone in the class into a group for a counseling project that we are doing. Last night we had to go on location to do the counseling project so one of the girls in my group opted to ride with me. The drive took around 30 minutes, so we had plenty of time to talk in the car. We had been talking for a bit when the subject of where we lived came up. I asked this girl where she lived and she gave the name of a small town in rural Minnesota. I mentioned to her that my DBF grew up not too far from there in another small town. When I mentioned the name of the town where DBF grew up, this girl looked at me and said that she had dated a guy from that town. She then asked me what DBF's name was, and I told her. She asked if he had any brothers, and I replied that he did. Turns out, when this girl was in high school, she had dated my DBF's younger brother!!! We both looked at each other in amazement! It definitely is a small world after all!
I had something similar happen to me at work a couple of years ago. At the time, I was a sub in the school kitchens and when I walked into one of them for the first time, I introduced myself. The lady I worked with kept repeating my last name and the said are you related to... At this point she had to stop and think for another minute and I was thinking OMG, who is she going to name. She finally said the name of one of my brothers-in-law. Turns out, her daughter dated my brother in law for quite a while.
When we were at Disney over Christmas we were standing looking at the trains set up in the America pavilion and a guy came up to my DH and asked him if he was from Alabama (he had on an Auburn University sweatshirt) and DH said no my wife grew up in Opelika well then this guy whose back was to me said so did I and he turned around and I was like OMG! Chuck and he said OMG Ashley and we hugged DH was looking at us like we were nuts it turns out that I grew up with Chuck and we graduated high school together his mom was my math teacher. I seriously had not seen him since graduation 18 years ago!!! He now lives in Washington DC but I met his wife and kids and vice versa!! Very cool!
My dad went to one of his cousin's wedding reception. She is from the East side of Indy.
Anyway, while talking to the (slightly younger than him) couple at his table, he recognized the name: It was MY DH's sister's Ex-husband and his wife!! Dad thought it was funny, and told them - and they didn't talk to him for the rest of the night.
The only similar experience I've had was when in Junior Hi - a VERY LONG time ago! While vacationing in Florida during the summer (very much pre-Disney) I saw one of my classmates at a tourist stop. We were so excited - hugged, exchanged stories, etc. What made this so amazing was that we really never had much to say to each other back home!
I ran into a guy I went to high school with (in Oregon) on Halloween here in VA Beach. He was a couple of years ahead of me and had joined the Navy right after he graduated (in 1991) . . . I joined the Navy 4 years later and have since gotten out. He is still in the Navy and, oddly enough, lives not too far from us and is a member of my next door neighbors' church!
I went to summer camp with a girl who got a call that her brother had been in a serious car accident back home. A few years later, my college roommate invited me home with her for the weekend, where I met her BF for the first time. When I heard his last name, I asked him if he was related to the girl from summer camp. Turns out HE was the brother! Too weird!
Also I ran into a friend of a friend at Philadelphia airport. I was returning home from WDW, she was coming back from a trip to Tallahassee to visit relatives. We were on the same flight from Philly to Syracuse but neither one knew the other one would be there.
Another time, I ran into my friend's cousin at JFK airport coming back from Florida. I was heading back north and she was going down to their time share in Stuart, FL. Not terribly unusual since they live just outside NYC, but it was odd b/c I didn't know they'd be traveling that night and never expected to run into anyone I knew.
