| Need clothesline tips...dryer broken! So, our dryer gave up the ghost and repair is the same as buying new, which we don't want to do right now. I'm now a proud owner of an umbrella clothesline, but the first few attempts have left us with stiff clothes. Back in the day, when I used cloth diapers, I'd line dry, then toss them to tumble for a few minutes to soften up. I used a fabric softener as well as a water softener, but our things are still a bit scratchy (and 12yo is VERY particular about how clothes feel). Any tips?

| I wish I had an answer for you. I've never line-dried anything outside. The things that I line-dry in the house (sweaters and delicates) all seem to be fine. I just use Tide and no fabric softner (because I only buy sheets for the dryer). Maybe try without the fabric softner? My grandmother had the same type of line at her house. I kind of remember the towels and sheets being not-so-soft.

| Ugh, reminds me of my days when the clothesline was one of my chores. Everything was stiff. I just gave it all a good shake to loosen it up and sometimes I hung it in the bathroom during my shower in the morning to soften it up with some steam. Worked okay.

| My Dmom would take the line-dryed clothes, sprinkle them with water (which always cracked me up to wash something - dry it - and wet it again), roll them in little balls put them in the freezer until it was their turn to be ironed. She ironed everything! When DH and I first got married, he never understood why I tried to iron his underwear! Sorry, I know this doesn't help but it sure did bring up some scary and funny memories! Ironing does help though!

| A really good breeze helps a little. Things get especially stiff when the air is completely still. Definitely give Chrissi's "little shake" technique a go and maybe even rub stuff together a bit to try to soften them up.

| It's not something I've ever noticed over here - we put all our clothes on the line in the summer. Maybe it's the fact that usually we have a breeze over here?

| jeans and towels are gonna be scratchy no matter what..... the rest can be tumbled a minute or two without heat to soften them up a bit. A really good breeze helps a lot too.... but the towels and jeans just wont soften up.....atleast in my experience with a clothesline....

| I have lines up in my basement and hang up whenever I have the time to save money. I do notice that towels and jeans are stiff no matter what but we don't really care. Just shake them out and use a good fabric softener. |

| my dryer just died too. My problem is I have to iron over items twice as long to get them wrinkle free. Is it just me or am I nutz? |
