Interesting! I had to pay a cancellation fee on my Nextel contract 2 years ago - I was NOT happy about it, but I had a year left on the contract (I'd been with them for 2 years, renewed, and was in the middle of my second 2 year contract) and it was cheaper to do that than stay with them, compared to what I would save/get from switching companies.

reduced the closer you are to the renewal/end of contract date
