I know that feeling about closing the garden down for the season. I was pulling out plants that were past their best yesterday and hiding away anything prone to frost. With going away, by the time we get home in November, I don't doubt we'll have had a couple of frosts.

SNOW! That is a four letter word I do not like! :
We have had absolutely beautiful weather here the last three days! Warm sunshine, blue skies and I have enjoyed every minute of it! I know the bottom will soon fall out of it and I so don't enjoy cold, damp, gray days!
Dh is out mowing right now and I have the windows opened. I know by Wednesday, the furnace will need to be back on!

We woke up to 9 inches of snow. Sun is out now and the wind is blowing. Snow isn't bad, it is the wind that comes with our winter that drives me to the brink of insanity!!

Ugh - snow is the nastiest four letter word in the dictionary. But it was a glorious 85 deg here today. Love those last warm days of autumn. Is it politically incorrect to call it "Indian Summer?" If yes, what do you call it now?

Here in MT we've got at least 5" so far with no sign of it letting up, you guys. I just went out and shoveled the really wet gunk off the deck and off of the sidewalks. We've lost power for just a blip of a second, but the power lines and trees with leaves still are really suffering. My poor ash tree out back has had a few limbs snapped off. I went around and shook the snow off of everything I could reach. It blanketed me with a shower.

The satellite tv isn't coming in because it's snowing so hard and the cloud cover is too thick. The boys have occupied themselves playing a marathon of Disney monopoly and trading Pokemon cards. I managed to get all of my essays corrected by 3:00 pm. Who knew all I needed to get motivated was a snowstorm??

We'll be keeping our eyes on the weather tomorrow morning as I suspect we'll be delayed in starting school. I say delayed because we NEVER close. :

For all those with temps in the glorious 60's-80's...I live vicariously through you.

Sounds like you are like me... it's not the snow that is the worst - it is the cold weather that lasts for 6 or 7 months.

It's not the first time that there's been a bad snowstorm on (our) Thanksgiving weekend. I remember 8 or 10 years ago we went "back home" for Thanksgiving and got storm stayed for a couple extra days. DH missed work and the kids missed school as a result. We've never gone "back home" for Thanksgiving again because the weather can be so iffy.

But then again, we have years where mid-October is beautiful. Canadian Thanksgiving weekend is the weekend DH & I got married 23 years ago and we had beautiful weather.

In this part of the world, snow in September is more the norm. The past two years we have been fortunate with long autumns. Apparently, we were overdue for a good storm!
Like WDWJAMBA mentioned, the broken limbs are a huge downfall of early snows as the trees haven't lost all their leaves, so therefore, a heavy snow can break a tree in half. Not good! This happens in the spring as well when the trees are leafing out. Neighbors lost 80% of a maple due to this.
