for the reminder, EJ!! We're hardwired, but we're keeping an eye on my parents' house - we should probably run over there and change the batteries for them.

Yep, we had to change ours last week because they were beeping. Normally we do change them when we change our clocks but for some reason they died early this year.

He actually licked both! He licked the old ones because they were still laying on the desk waiting to be put in the recycling container he has for old batteries and he wanted to make sure they were the dead ones (even though I told them they were). He licked them and got a jolt, so he decided to lick a new one fresh out of the package to compare because he didn't think the "dead" ones were very dead. He found out that although the old ones had a little juice left, the new ones are a lot stronger....
My smoke detector started beeping Friday night but of course I forgot to get a new battery when I went to the store today. I did remember to turn ahead my clocks last night so I haven't been off all day
