Has this ever happened to you?
You belong to an organization or are involved as one of "the crowd" (for lack of a better word). You are asked to be an officer or become more involved and it changes your whole perspective?
I was a Girl Scout my whole childhood and loved it. My DD has been a scout for 5 years. She loves it. She has a great leader; I love her troop and the girls and what she's learning. I don't even mind being the troop Cookie Mom.
But this year I joined the Service Unit team. And I hate it. Between dealing with Council and our SUM I'm getting really burned out and disenchanted. I'm starting to hate Girl Scouts.
Yup. DH and I used to belong to a classic 4x4 club that had a pretty good membership but no one wanted to be officers, so we took a turn at it. Turns out the reason no one wanted to be officers was because the President only wanted to do things his way but wanted everyone else to do the work and no one was willing. Needless to say, the club no longer exists.

I've been in similar situations and I do have some advice..... STEP DOWN ASAP!! Otherwise you'll get so burned out that you completely get out of the organization all together! There is a season for everything. At one time, maybe it was your season to be in that position, now it is not. If you keep going when your season is up, you will end up not being involved in the organization at all. Very politely and quickly step down and pass it off to someone else. That's my opinion...
I have some orginizations that I used to give money to. (I won't mention names in public). But then they started supporting causes that I didn't like!!! So now I give no more money.
I was a Girl Scout for one year when I was a kid - hated it. BUT - I love Boy Scouts (hey, register Teresa as a Terry and no-one's the wiser! - I was the first female BS, but no-one buy my den knew!) Anyway -
I know the value of a GOOD scout system. ALL of my girls (3 DDs plus 1 step-DD) were GS. This is the second year I've done nothing in the organization, after over 20 years of working in every capacity there was for a volunteer. You name it, I did it - from the troop to the SU, to the Council (oversees service units, usually a large area in a state), to the National level. I loved most of it - but there were times, especially at the SU level that I was ready to chuck it in! There are people who don't understand a thing about tradition and want to hi-jack the show and make it their own DD's plaything, and then there are those who are so traditional that they can't think "out of the box" and try to stuff you back in the box when you venture out!
Speak your mind at the meetings, and try to have fun with it. Our meetings really got a lot better when we moved them from a church basement (which then the Muslim and the Jewish leaders couldn't come to) to a restaurant with drinks!
Volunteering should be fun and make you feel good when you complete a task or project. If you don't get joy from it there are a million other ways to contribute that will bring you joy. I had to let go of a group because all it did was bring stress to me and in turn my family.
Good Luck in what ever you decide.
I know the feeling very well. I was on our GS Product Program Committee for 3 years. I was a troop leader for 4 years. (two for those years I did both.) I did get burned out, but at the time I felt like there was no one else that would be able to take things over for me. It finally got to a point that I HAD to give it up for my own mental and physical health.
Step down now if you are feeling even an INKLING of burnout.
