Here's the sitch: I have received some $$ for graduation gifts. Part of me says to put it in savings and be responsible. Part of me says, I worked hard, I earned a little splurge. I'm considering the 3G Kindle (which would still leave $$ for savings), but here's my dilemma.
I was an avid reader from the time I was about 3 (yes, I learned very early) until I was 29yo. That year, I was carrying 23 semester hours as a single mom and had to read (and write papers on) 26 novels. The following year, I became an English teacher and was FED UP with reading fiction. I've also always been something of a literary snob and have never been one to read "modern" fiction. In the interim years, I've read books on psychology, autism, leadership, etc, but very few novels (I did enjoy the Harmony series and the Mitford series). During my last break in school, I decided to suck it up and revisit the classics for free on my Kindle app for my iTouch. I enjoyed reading them very much, but found the iTouch to be annoying. I have since downloaded the app to my Droid, and don't much care for it there, either. It's too small and I have to "turn" the page too often.
I can't carry a full book with me at my job, but I could carry the Kindle. A lot of what I do is hurry up and wait, so it would be nice to pull it out and read a page or two.
Does anyone have the new Kindle? Will it make me fall in love with reading again now that I'm finished with school? Is it a good value? (I also have 2 DDs who might want to use it as well). Or do I do the grown-up thing, save the money, and suck it up with the Droid app instead?
I am a brand new kindle user. I received my kindle about 2 weeks ago and love it!!! I do love to read and will read simple love stories, etc. I have downloaded several free books and have been reading things I probably never would have before just because they were there and free. I have bought one book, but not read it yet. I think you would become a reader for pleasure again given the chance. I had downloaded the app for my iphone while waiting for my kindle to come in and, like you, found it too small to enjoy, plus the battery would go down so fast. The new kindle battery has quite a long life. I have the wi-fi only version ($139) and keep the wi-fi turned off unless I am actively downloading things. We have wi-fi at our house so it would be active all the time if I didn't turn it off. I have not had to charge my kindle up since it first came in and the battery seems to be about 1/2 full still.
I can't tell you how to spend or save your money. Only you can decide what is best for you, but I think you do deserve a treat for all the hard work you put in to get your master's degree. Since Target now carries the kindle you could check it out in the store and help with your decision.
I have an older Kindle (from last Christmas). I love it, and I especially love a couple of things you mentioned: portability (I love to switch around a lot, and I have everything from Elizabeth Barrett Browning to the Bible to John Saul to trashy novels on it), and free books!!! Oh, the free books!! I have found such great reads by just buying the freebies! Of course, I've also found some that make me roll my eyes and delete, delete, delete but over all, I've gotten to read some writers I wouldn't have otherwise.
I don't know about the 3G, but the one I have is really great.
If I were in your shoes, I would save the money for now. If and when you get a full-time position, then I would splurge and get it if you still really want it.
I bought a Nook, and I love it! It wasn't the least bit practical, but it's so cool, and I love being able to carry it in my purse and read a few pages here and there.

I've been drooling over the Barnes and Noble Nook. You can also subscribe to magazines and newspapers with it and lend books from your library to others with a nook. I just went to "visit" my new passion and found out that you can download books for free on certain days and they have classes on the nook on Monday nights. The best part for me though would be the ability to download a book whenever I wanted, for less money than driving an hour to the nearest bookstore and hoping they have the book I want in stock. I see a nook purchase in my future, but I'm just not ready to part with the money just yet.
My daughter and I both have Kindles and love them. Books were taking over our house becasue we read so much. We like being able to buy books for less than the bookstore and ther are so many free ones, too.

Saving money might be the "grown up" thing to do, but you only graduate with your master's degree once. If I were you, I would splurge and get the Kindle if that is what you really want. I have Kindle for PC and Kindle for iPod Touch downloaded, and I use them all the time. Even so, I'm tempted to get a Kindle now that the price has been dropping. The nice thing with Kindle is that you can access your books from any device (PC, iPod, or Kindle) and sync them to the last page read. I will read books on my PC at work and then read that same book on my iPod Touch at home. I think that is a really cool feature!
