Found out there were a couple storage auctions in my area today & I do like to watch Storage Wars (not a huge fan but it is fun to watch) DS1, Jamie was so excited to be home for spring break from college so he could go too.. He was insistent he wanted to buy a locker no matter what.. or at least bid on one
We went to one this AM & it was poorly run.. the guy was trying to be Dan from Storage Wars nicknaming the locker, giving the same speech as Dan..
They staged the locker so you couldn't see past the mattress in front... The bidding was ridiculous.. you couldn't hear the auctioneer or the bids & one guys bid wasn't accepted because the auctioneer said he didn't hear him.. there was also only one locker at this place..
We went to another one this afternoon that had 20 storage units up for auction ... It was so well run & VERY cool.. We ended up winning 3 units... one unit only had a vintage clothes dryer in but we got it for $7.50..
The other 2 lockers were packed... We got multiple (5+) large boxes of DVD's in one & multiple boxes of books in the other... there were also lots of other cool stuff.. & we got both lockers for UNDER $200 (combined)
The regulars there said there is rarely an auction that goes over $500 & they were right.. most of the lockers went for $100-200 . I think maybe 2 lockers went over $500. ( out of 20)
we spent most of this evening cleaning it out (you have to have everything removed in 24 hours) & now my basement, office & storage shed is FILLED with stuff...
This is the only pic we took of the one locker..& this is only 1/4 of what we got.. there is still tons more stuff behind the mattresses including a beautiful Ethan Allan Sleigh bed ..
there is a ton more stuff to the side not in the photo as well
We had a great time & Jamie loved bidding & would love to do this all summer...
I think with all the stuff we got I'll be busy with Ebay all Summer long!!
I wondered what your plan was. eBay, aha.
Glad you had fun. Not something I'd ever do. I don't like having extra stuff hanging around. I need purging, not adding.
My DH is begging to do this, but I am so resistant. It is cool to read of your experience. How long do you have to clean out the storage locker after you took possession of it?

24 hours but the storage facility where we bought ours from said they would be willing to go up to 72 hours if people needed.
I went thorough a small portion of the stuff from one locker more thoroughly & found a ton of personal papers... it seemed the person who owned the locker was a teacher from Africa & he is/was HIV positive & there were a TON of meds ( pain etc) kinda creeped me out.. (not the HIV but the highly addictive pain meds, Oxy etc) I flushed all of the meds!!
also found several small bags of coins (US).. & some rolled coins.. I'm going to count all of the money we find when I'm done & see how much we got.
I enjoy Storage Wars and often wondered what "real" people did with the lockers. Now I know!
Congrats on the stuff. Sounds like a great time. I've always thought I might like to do one!
