Southwest Airlines credit card and points questions
I got my husband to apply for the SW airlines credit card for this recent 50,000 mile promotion and he got the card. It said he would receive it in 7 to 10 days.
So once he gets it we will charge $1,000 on it right away and then hopefully soon will have the 50,000 airlines miles.
I have a question or two...
For those of you who have the SW airline credit card or even just are a member of their frequent flier program...how long can you save up the points before they expire if you know? I can't find any FAQ or details on the airline miles.
Also, is the availability of seats lower when trying to book with miles? Do you have a hard time getting the flights you want?
And also, if you book the flights with miles and your dates change do they just change it or do they charge you money on top of the miles to change your flights?
We have 5 tickets to buy so the miles will only help us partially with those tickets. But I think DH is going to start using the card to pay our mortgage every month then paying it off at the end of every month so that we accumulate massive points and it will cover the cost of DH and I flying to WDW every year.
Have any of you gotten this card recently and if so, what is the normal credit limit? Is it based on income or credit score? When we got the instant approval online it didn't give any info about what the credit limit would be on it.

I just applied but I know when I looked over everything, I read the points don't expire
UNLIMITED REWARD SEATS—If there is a seat available, you can redeem your points for it.
NO BLACKOUT DATES—Every day is now available for reward travel.
POINTS DON'T EXPIRE***—Redeem your points today, or save them for next year. It's no problem

I read through the SWA website (posted above) that if you need to change your flight and it costs less points, you'll get the extra back. It doesn't say anything about if the tickets cost more than your points.

As I said in my other post, I too just applied but I did the same thing - online and it just said I was approved. I have other cards with Chase so I could probably call and ask what my credit line is but right now I don't know. I'm sure like with everyone else, it depends upon if you have something with them already, what you have for other credit cards and debt, etc.

I've had my SW card for quite a while now. I think I'm up to my 6th free flight. The points do not expire. I put as much on the card as I can pay off the following month. My heating oil alone got me a free flight one year. When you book your flight, you will be charged $2.50 each way and if you want to use EBCI, you will need to pay for that as well. They won't put that on points.
SWA does not charge fees to change your flight.
As far as credit limits go, my limit was too high for me so they called and reduced it without a problem. I've had good service from them, so I have no complaints. I hope you enjoy your card as much as I enjoy mine.
I told my husband we should put all of our monthly bills on it because right now they all just draft from his checking account on the due date. He could put them all on the SW card and have that monthly payment just drafted from his account like all the other bills.
If he just pays our house payment with it, it will only be enough for one round trip flight a year. From our airport to Orlando is 16,000 points. SO that would cover our house pmt. But I am not sure all of our other bills come to 16,000 in one year also I would have to sit down and add them up. If they did then we could get enough points for 2 tickets a year. And DH and I could use those when we go without the kids.
Otherwise we will save them up until we have enough for 5 tickets and use them in a few years when we all go back as a family.
The first 50,000 points will be for THIS November's trip.
I'm glad the points don't expire because it may take us 2 years to reaccumulate another 50,000 points.
I just reminded DH we have to only put monthly expenses that we would have to pay off at the end of the month and never carry a balance because that interest is 15%!! EEK!!
We don't normally use credit cards. We only have our house for debt, never had any credit card debt. Our cars are paid for. And we have savings for in case of emergencies so we have never needed a credit card. And we don't NEED this one but I asked DH to get it for the airline miles. We both are firm believers in never getting into debt for vacations or household emergencies like when our whole A/C unit had to replaced at the beginning of the year and cost over $5,000. Thank god we had it saved or we probably would have needed a credit card.
Hopefully DH will pay everything with this card and we will get a ton of miles to use every year. I know he will fly with me instead of driving if we can get the flights on miles.
But it is cheaper to drive so that is what he prefers to do. I prefer to fly. I hate being in a car for more than 10 minutes for any reason. That 12 hour drive is torture for me.
So I am doing the happy dance that he got this card for me. Well not for me, but because I asked him to.
