I also wonder if it's too much to ask that the list they send out/post is actually what the student needs. Every single year (and DS is going into 6th this year), we've bought the supplies on the list and it never fails that when he goes to "meet the teacher" day the teacher says "Oh, you don't actually need this and this and that." WHY IS IT ON THE LIST?!?!?
This reminds me of college. I had quite a few classes where we had to buy books and then the professor never used them. I guess the lists are messed up no matter what grade!
I always waited until after school started to pick up supplies. On the first day they went with pencils and a note book but not all the things on the list. Not only did it change but my kids never needed half the stuff.

Don't get me started on this one.
My favorite was the year DD needed a 4 subject notebook. I looked all over for that sucker -- found lots of 3s and 5s. It got to the point where every parent in the neighborhood was looking, with instructions to buy 7 if they found them.
One dad finally found some and we paid almost $4 each for them.
Fast forward to the last day of school -- DD brings it home, and she's used less than half of the first "subject" section.
We could have bought a one subject notebook for 17 cents!
But I digress... this year the list they mailed and the list they posted aren't the same. Tried calling to see which one I should buy from and the lady at school was, shall we say, "snippy" about it.

What I love about the list is the section on my step-daughter's that says, "Not to be used by student. To be handed into homeroom teacher on the first day of school for distribution later in the year." WHAT?? And it's not just pencils, pens, and paper. It's folders, notebooks, etc. I understand that some parents cannot afford to send their kids to school with all the supplies, that's fine, I'm willing to help. However, it would be nice to get back what "extra" I put in because I know they will need the same things next year!
I don't know which is worse - getting 2 different lists or not being able to find the list at all. I had to ask Abby's Inclusion Coordinator where the list even was on the website because I certainly couldn't find it. And then when I found it, there was an item on there that I wasn't sure about. It said "correction pen" and I have no idea what they mean by that. Is it a pen she needs just to mark corrections (another list - that I just found in her notebook the other day - says "red pen for correcting), is it one of those white-out correction pens or is it the one I think of - the pen eraser on one end and the brush on the other (that's a correction pen to me).

This would be ideal, but it's not practical for where I live. ALL of the counties surrounding mine went back to school today. My county, however, doesn't go back until Aug 27. By the time we go back, all of the stores are so ready to clear out the school stuff so they can put up Halloween or whatever, there is almost nothing left. We have to buy our stuff early or it can be really hard to find.

I think of like a "White Out" pen as a correction pen, not a red pen for mistake-marking. I'm not sure what you mean when you talk about a pen with an eraser on one end and a brush on the other...I don't think I've ever seen that before. ?? But I can imagine it would be frustrating to not exactly be sure what they were talking about.
After several years of missing some good back to school sales & realizing that the kids needed the same basic stuff each year (crayons, pens, markers, white out, pencils, etc.), I finally got smart & bought a big plastic bin & buy whatever Staples, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. have on sale for 1c, 25c, $1. The kids then go "shopping" from my bin. Anything extra they need, I will then purchase once they start school & find out exactly what they need. Anything we don't use, I donate to my church for a local center for disadvantaged kids.

Right there with you but mine is about the first day of school. On the districts own site, they have 2 different days listed as the first day of school. Um, seriously? I also love how specific the lists are, specific for items that don't exist mind you. And why 3 boxes of pencils for a 4th grader? How 'bout one and when he runs low I replenish? All of his supplies are "community" supplies anyway and put in jars in the room. Oh please, I have to stop or I'll get all worked up
Darlene, I remember those! We used to call them typewriter erasers. You erased your mistake with one end & brushed off the "crumbs" with the other. I didn't know they even still made those things...

I've bought so many unused things over the years that I don't need to buy many supplies anymore. Just pencils and dry erase markers usually. But one of the teachers this year had a green highlighter on her list and we didn't notice it until my DD was getting her backpack together yesterday.
I told my daughter that she could just grab one of the yellow ones that I already had but nope - she didn't want to do that and get in trouble.
The language arts teacher had green highlighter on her list and a green highlighter is what DD had to bring. At 12 years old she is a drama queen and not having one almost started a total melt down yesterday so I went out and tracked one down. It took going to 3 stores to find it and standing in a 20 minute line but by golly, I got that stupid green highlighter. LOL
I did notice today that I'm out of 1 1/2 inch binders so I need to pick up some of those when they hit clearance. Alot of teachers seem to like those especially in High School.
