It looks like I'm going to have to finish a paint project DH started (a long ugly subject I may post about elsewhere). It's int he bathroom, and the taping is driving me nuts!
I mentioned this to a neighbor (who has painted every room in her house about once a year -- I think her powder room must be measurabley smaller by now! LOL!) and she said "Why are you taping? We never tape anything!"
Really? Can you paint without taping? Don't you get paint on the edge of the mouldings?
I always tape everything. I am a messy painter, I even tape off the ceiling because otherwise I end up with paint on the ceiling. I do know people who can manage to paint without taping, but they must have a steadier hand than I do.
I am a tapper. Can't paint without it. I really like the special blue painters tape over regular masking tape and preferable a 2" wide roll over a 1" wide. But then I don't just paint the wall a solid color either. I have painted horizontal stripes in one room another has elborate curly-q's that were taped out and painted over - obviously with smaller than 2" tape.
If we paint, we always tape. We used a professional painter when we wanted all our rooms painted at once. They practically lived with us for a month. They didn't tape anything, not even the windows in the French Doors. Everything was perfect but it did take forever and I was sooooo happy when they finally left.

I always tape if the wall has never been painted or is older paint. It's easier to paint over fairly new paint and get coverage without painting 2 coats. I'm a fairly neat painter, so it really doesn't bother me too much. DH is an impatient painter and needs the tape to keep him from getting it everywhere. If you're patient enough, you should do fine.
I think it depends on how steady a hand you have in your painting abilities. My DH did not have to tape when he painted parts of our house, but I was too paranoid and definitely taped everything..
I always tape. I just finished DD's bdrm and used the new blue painters tape that's a smidge more $ then their other one but well worth it. I had 1 maybe 2 seepage spots and it came off great! The oreo work always takes forever but is well worth it, to me.
