Every year! As an Infection Control nurse I started getting the shot to show others that it is OK. I also GIVE the shots every year at our flu clinics at work. A few helpful hints for those who are a little fearful of them:
1) Make certain they are using the smallest needle possible
2) Get the shot in the arm you use THE MOST - moving your arm around a lot as you go about your usual business really helps keep any soreness down
3) DO NOT tense up as you are being shot!
4) Take a couple of aspirin, Tylenol, etc if you begin to have any soreness.
5) Expect everything to be OK, and it usually will.
Every year! I work in a hospital and we get ours for free. I never miss a year, and I have DH getting one every year now too (have to pay for his, but well worth it!).
Yes. The visiting nurse assn has a booth at the state fair and we get them there. It's so easy -- we're already in short sleeves, it's early so the shot can take hold before flu season, they have flumist for DD, and we follow the shot with a visit to the funnel cake booth. What's not to like about that?

You know, I always got the shot in my less-dominant arm (my left) and then heard this somewhere so this year I got it in my dominant arm (my right) and it was WAY worse as far as soreness. Before, it would just be a little sore that evening or the next day, but this year in my right arm, my arm was so sore that night that I couldn't even lift it. Fortunately it felt much better by morning, but any idea what happened in my case? The shot didn't hurt at all, but man was it sore later!
I have never gotten a Flu shot and I have never made my kids get a Flu shot. Nobody in my family has ever had the Flu. Nobody ever even gets standard colds in our house. So I am not very worried about getting the Flu. If it ever happens, getting the actual Flu gives you years more immunity to getting it again than any shot can give you.
And as far as getting a Flu shot then getting the Flu... I have seen it happen numerous times to ppl I know. It is possible and it does happen.
I don't get any shots that aren't going to SAVE MY LIFE and I don't make my kids get any shots except the required vaccines that they have to have to go to public school.

The reason you know people who have gotten the shot and then get the flu is not because they are getting the flu from the shot. It is because the shot takes 10-14 days to become protective, and so if you are exposed to the virus shortly before you get the shot or shortly afterwards, you can still get the flu before the shot has been able to build your immunity.
There is also always the chance that you will get the flu anyway, because there are so many different flu viruses out there, but they put the most common strains in the vaccine each year so it can hugely reduce your chances.
I'm not saying everyone has to or should get one, just throwing some facts out there about things that are often misconstrued.
