| Test worries Ok, so I want to try and start grad school in the fall, I have to take the GRE in March so I have scores back in time to apply. HOWEVER, there is no way under the sun I will pass that test. I have been working on an early elementary level for the past 4 years and it's been almost 10 years since I took the SATs. I have looked at some of the sample questions, and I have no clue. I stink at analogies... the math is gone from my head since I emphasize more 1+1 that "if John paints a house in 6 hours and Mary paints a house in 4 hours, how long will it take them to paint a house together?" I GOT NO CLUE!
Anybody out there taken the GRE? How did you survive?? |

| Re: Test worries Melissa,
I know just how you feel. I studied for the GRE way back when and struggled with the math specifically. My DH who is a whiz tried his best to help me, but when I tore up the study book, he gave up! |

| Re: Test worries Not the GRE but the LSAT, so I can sympathize!
I've been doing those SuDoku puzzels, and I swear they remind me of the LSAT (although they're more fun). They may be a good way to exercise your mind for thinking the way those test do. Good luck! | Re: Test worries I took it to get into grad school - but it was 12 years ago when I took it. I know I passed - although not a clue how. There are programs you can buy to help you study for it....

| Re: Test worries I took the GMATs (GREs for business school) after being out of college for two years. I did terrible on the math but did awesome on the other parts and got a 520 . . . not fabulous but just enough to be accepted to the grad school I wanted (Bryant University).
Find out the minimum test score your chosen schools will accept and then decide what you'll need to do to make that score. Talk to the admissions people and see what kind of value they put on the GRE scores. Remember, GRE test scores are just one thing they look at . . . your college grades are usually much more important.
Try to relax about it. Get some sample tests. There are tons of books out there to help you prepare. There are lots of refresher courses you can take.
I am sure you will do fine! |

| Re: Test worries You'll do fine. I took it my senior year of college, I found it alot easier than the SAT. I didn't do any prepping for it-- actually I decided to take it, and I think 2 days later went down to Sylvan Learning Center in Philly and took it on their computer (I had trouble with the math as well). Had the results in minutes (it was a last minute decision to go to grad school right away). Honestly, I don't think grad schools put as much credence into the GRE as colleges to the SAT. They don't have as many applicants, and I think they really take other things into consideration. I really wouldn't worry about it-- you've been teaching for a few years, you're gonna get accepted. I remember my professor asked what my scores were, and thought I should take them again after prepping a bit (my math scores weren't so hot since I only took one math course in college)-- I didn't take them again, and was accepted. Don't forget most grad schools will let you take 2 classes before applying and becoming matriculated, so if you do have to take them again, you can still go ahead and start the first classes. There were alot of teachers in my classes at Villanova, who had been out of college for years and were concerned about the GRE, so they were taking their first two classes before applying since they figured the school wouldn't reject them if they had A's in their classes up to that point. |
