Tower of Terror w/o the Terror...

I haven’t been to DW in an awful long time and I was wondering about the Tower of Terror. I remember that there was a short Haunted Mansion style ride through scary rooms before the actual plunge. I also read in a guide book that Disney has a policy that you can always back out of a ride. What I wanted to know was if it is possible to see the first part of the ride without taking the actual plunge? I can't remember how the lines for the ride go. Thanks!!!

Re: Tower of Terror w/o the Terror...

I believe Disney has a "chicken exit" for all of the more exciting attractions. The Tower of Terror preshow is awesome -- an "episode" of The Twilight Zone is shown in the hotel's library, telling the tale of the five people who entered the Twilight Zone there. You, of course, later join them by riding in the elevator.

It's not for everyone, that's for sure -- but the preshow and queue are worth your time. You won't be the first person who chooses the chicken exit.

Have a great time! -- Linda

You can back out any time before you get in the actual elevator. Once you get on the elevator, it's too late! I don't like this ride so I go through the queue with DH and then take the chicken exit. (Which, just to warn you, is an elevator ride down a floor! You can queue almost up to the elevator, then take the Chicken Exit. Once you're in the elevator, though, there is no backing out. The Haunted Mansion-style part that you remember is part of the whole ride.

Good luck!

I've seen the Chicken Exit-- I believe its on the left of the elevators. As everyone said, just DO NOT get on the elevator (the ones you sit down on)-- there is an elevator you walk into for the preshow that is just at the end of the lobby. Once you've seen the show with the TV screen you'll enter the loading dock-- do not get on those elevators.

Re: Tower of Terror w/o the Terror...

I was afraid you were going to say that you had ridden, and they "Disneyed" it as my kids say. (they feel that the Haunted House and POTC are much better at DL - because it's not quite so calm - they're scarier! And the ones at DLP are much better and scarier than that!)

So, yes, you can take the exit. My middle DD does, she doesn't like the drop in the ride.

Re: Tower of Terror w/o the Terror...

There are actually two "touring the hotel" sections.

One occurs on foot and takes you through the hotel and then the boiler room. That you can do prior to the chicken exit.

Once you are loaded on your elevator (after the chicken exit), there's another tour of the hallways leading up to the drop shaft. That part, you'd miss.

I have to admit being unsettled by the second "tour" -- I felt much more secure in the drops at Disneyland (where the hallway section doesn't happen.) I kept thinking "Are they sure that we're in the shaft correctly?! I mean, really SURE!!"
