Rental strollers

I haven't been here much lately so forgive me if this has already been discussed. (I couldn't find it)

I'm sure you all know about the horrible price increase on stroller rentals. I've always advised people to take their own but even more so now - that price is killer. Anyway, I have had several friends visit WDW after the price hike and they've all reported that the rental strollers are being stolen. I'm not suprised by this at all. Actually we found out during a conference call with the Disney folks and the first words out of my mouth (after 'Holy Cow!' ) were to say that strollers would be stolen left and right now.

Friends rented because they have older kids who need a stroller for Disney, but they don't own one at home anyore so they didn't have a choice. People are taking them while they are parked, and replacing the name sign with their own. One lady just returned and said that her husband had to wait in line for almost an hour to get a replacement stroller, because there were so many people waiting (since theirs were swiped also).

In case anyone was planning on renting, I thought I'd mention this as a heads up. I think at least adding something personal - a ribbon or scarf tied on that wouldn't be easy to remove, or leaving a bag of something in it - might help deter the would-be thief.

It's a shame it's come to this. I don't think putting something personal on the stroller will help. That would just be taken too and taken off the stroller.

I'm wondering how many strollers have been truly swiped and how many have just been moved by CM and the person renting didn't realize it. I can see a stroller with no personal belongings on it being taken by someone who's too cheap to rent one but to outright take one with someone else's stuff on it - that's outright theft. And what does the thief do with the stuff - throw it away? I'm sure someone would catch on to this even if it's the guys who change the trash.

When we saw the announcement for the severe price increase I was afraid that this would happen. In the past folks have not reported much stroller theft. But since this change the reports appear to be dramatically increased. Even personal strollers appear to be more likely to be taken then in the past.

I realize that many people mistake their stroller being moved for it having been stolen but the stories around the 'net are getting more specific with folks saying that they are having to wait a VERY long time for a replacement where in the past that was not the case. Many of these stories are from WDW veterans who know that CMs move strollers.......

Sad.

That's a shame this is happening. I can't imagine waiting an HOUR for a replacement. That would make me really angry!

That is too bad. I would simply recommend that those who rent strollers keep their receipts on hand, so they can easily get replacements if necessary. We rented strollers for many years when our kids were older... very roomy and convenient for tired tots. We never had any problems with stealing, though we did misplace our stroller from time to time!

Taken from the Disney Website:

Strollers are available for rent at a variety of locations throughout Disney Theme Parks, Water Parks, and the Downtown Disney® Area. Quantities are limited, and subject to availability. Double-passenger strollers are not available for rent at the Downtown Disney® Area.

The stroller rental fee is $15.00 per day for a single-passenger stroller and $31.00 per day for a double-passenger stroller. A $100 credit card deposit is required per stroller rented at the Downtown Disney® Area. The rented stroller must be returned to the original rental location to receive a credit card deposit refund.

For Guests who require a stroller rental for multiple days, we offer a Length of Stay rental ticket where you make a one-time payment transaction for as many days of rental that you will need. Single-passenger strollers are available for $13.00 per day and double-passenger strollers for $27.00 per day. Upon visiting a Theme Park, simply show your receipt at the stroller rental location and you will be expedited through the queue with little or no wait time.

We had never had a problem before with having our stroller stolen, but on our last trip there (June 2006) it was taken many times. Having been there for other visits we knew where to park and to look around to make sure a CM hadn't moved it. They were just taken/stolen. I was able to get new ones with no problem with my receipt but it was an inconvience. I agree the problem is only going to get worse with the higher fees. I'm glad we will no longer need one.

I know that there have been about a half-dozen threads in the past few days on Strollers due to the dramatic price increase and that this information has been included elsewhere but.....there are stroller rental agencies in Orlando that delivery to WDW and people have been quoting prices around $60/wk.

I had planned on renting a double stroller. But with the price hike, I've decided to buy a double stroller and take it with me, atleast then I'd get more use out of it for the money...
Just an idea, could you use a bike lock or something of that sort to keep your stroller safe?

Wow, I can't believe the price! Even with the price hike I can't believe that people would take someone else's stroller. I mean, what kind of person does that?

For the price of a rental for a week, I would think it would make more sense to just hit some consignment shops before you leave. Now I am glad I kept my double(kind with seat for toddler and normal holder for younger). I can let my cousin use it when we go next November.

I was a little shocked to find someone stealing strollers at first, but the more I read the rest of the posts, the more I accepted it. Now, I have seen a completley empty stroller in a near empty part of the park at night that was obviously abandoned, or seen a family just leave a stroller at Famtasmic because they didn't want to deal with the crowds at the return desk as they left the park, and taken these to push my kiddo to the front of the park. I know they weren't mine to take, but as a guest had obviously left them and a CM would have to return them, I figured it was okay as long as I returned it. Kind of like performing a service for the park. But to take someones stroller in the middle of the day is just awful. The people who do this are just despicable! And if they actually had someone elses belongings in it...I can't express it in words!

This will be our first time renting a stroller...and the steal a stroller stories are leading me to try a trick I have read before (this site or another one?) We're going to tie a clear bag to the stroller handle with a diaper in it. Hoping someone will see it and be too grossed out to want to steal it!
