What people don\'t know about WDW??

I got this idea while responding to another post... So I will have to tell the story over again...

My girlfriend is very sweet but uhh... ! She went to FL for a vacation and after attending a timeshare shpeal she was able to visit a park for "free." When she came back I asked her what park she had visited and she had said Disney! Okay...what part I asked her?? She had NO IDEA what so ever! After our conversation, I think she went to Universal, but I am still not sure!!

Anyway, this got me thinking (and laughing), has anyone asked you or said something about WDW that you just couldn't believe? I am not trying to be mean, but there are just so many sources out there like this board, you would think......

Can't wait to hear your stories

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

I know exactly what you are saying! I've stopped counting the number of people I've talked to who think WDW is just the Magic Kingdom, or the ones who think WDW and USF are the same thing!

Not only that but one person I work with went to Disney for a week about four years ago. She said how horrible it was, how busy and expensive. She said that after going to the "park" what else was there to do? They went back to their hotel at night and just sat there. Come to find out, they only went to MK. They didn't understand all the other signs because they didn't even know there were other parks and they were THERE!!!!

Now of course she can't understand why we go every year! I don't have the heart to tell her.

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

I've run into the following:

"We're not going to all the parks, just Disney World" (meaning the Magic Kingdom)

"Is Universal on the Hopper Pass?"

"Animal Kingdom is Disney??"

"I didn't go to many Disney parks, just City Walk" (City Walk is the Universal equivalent to Pleasure Island/DTD)

SHEESH! LOL

I'm a travel agent and I've heard all of the above...but the funniest thing to me is the people who want a room in Disney with an ocean view !!

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

I have run across those who think WDW and Universal Studios/IOA are run by "the same company" and "Since they are run by the same company, then why aren't their parks closer together? Why are there 2 completely different complexes?" (Why wasn't I aware of a Universal/ Disney merger? I watch the news!!! )

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!

I am wondering if some people have just been living under a rock for the last . . . oh, 30 years or WHAT???

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

I have a friend that has been to "Disney" twice in her lifetime. While I was preparing my 6th trip she says "why are you going back so often?. I think I've done everything there is to do at Disney".

So I say! "WOW You really hustled to do EVERTHING in two trips!"....with that I begin to grill her on rides and attractions and she had NO IDEA what I was talking about!

Turns out that she only went to MK........Oh and she thinks that US and Disney are all together.....(Geesh!) I had not the energy nor strength to explain it all to her..

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

My dad isnt a Disney buff like I am and has said to me often. I dont like going there, there isnt nothing really to do there! Uh hello?? Nothing to do there? He only did the parks and not DTD, PI, TL, BB and all the other stuff. There is just so much that this place offers, how can you get bored?

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

That whole not understanding that "Walt Disney World" does NOT mean only the Magic Kingdom drives me nuts! There are FOUR theme parks, TWO water parks, DTD, PI, a sports complex not to mention all of the resorts.

Oh, and when people insist they stayed in a Disney hotel - and when you ask the name of it they say The Marriott (or some other chain hotel). And then you can't get them to understand the difference. I've decided they just don't want to know and I will only make myself crazy trying to get them to understand.

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

I've heard most of these, too.

I also get frustrated when people refer to the Florida parks as Disneyland. I usually say, "Disney WORLD. DisneyLAND is in California." They always ask, "What's the difference?"

Oh, about 3,000 miles, 30,000 acres, 2 theme parks, 2 water parks, 20 resorts, 6 golf courses, and a sports complex.

People have no clue just how big WDW is and what's there!

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

I work at an AAA office and a lot of people say funny things about WDW. There was a lady once who came in and insisted she was staying "in the castle" at WDW!

Another lady came in and said she wanted to buy some fastpasses for WDW. I started to explain "We don't have fastpasses because...." and she cut me off and started yelling at me! I think she thought we were sold out of them, but I was trying to explain they are free. Another guy asked me "Two days is enough time to do WDW and Universal, right?"

I don't really feel any sympathy for people who are clueless about WDW- there is SO much information availiable on the internet, in books that there's really no excuse. -Steph

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

I've got to add one more...

My MIL calls it The Magic Palace.

And she recently called Mickey, Pluto and Goofy Walt Disney????

That one I don't get.

I'm loving this thread. Stephanie is right...there is so much info, there is no excuse for people to not understand. What I love the most is when I re-explain Disney to people who have already been there and they go:

"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH... I get it now."

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

As I posted in another thread, we had friends that went to WDW, stayed in a cabin at Ft. Wilderness, and all of them (2 parents, 2 girls ages 9 and 17, 2 boys ages 12 and 15) had a horrid time.
They kept asking "why do you go? there is nothing to do but those 2 parks. (MK and MGM) We couldn't even swim (huh?). Riding the bs everywhere was a pain. (I gave them a transportation guide - and did they not notice the monorail passing right OVER the bus?)
And, my favorite - There was nothing to eat, so we just ate in our cabin!

Re: What people don\'t know about WDW??

In 2002, I was in the bag-search line at Blizzard Beach (this was during spring break...tons and tons of people there) when the women behind me started talking about her "touring plan" for Blizzard Beach ??? She and her family were heading toward the back of the park, where they were going to get fast passes for the big rides, and then do the smaller water rides and come back later with their fast passes. HUH??? I thought of her often that trip, and wondered if she ever found the fast pass machine for Summit Plummet.

She was THERE and she still didn't get it!!!
