Annual pass vs. hopper pass

So I was checking around for ticket prices and it seems to me that it's almost cheaper to buy an annual pass than a 8 day hopper pass. Or at least they are pretty close in price. And since we are a DVC member they are discounted. What is everyone elses opinion?

Re: Annual pass vs. hopper pass

I bought an AP because with all of the discounts and free parking (We stay off site and I saved $34 just on this trip for parking alone), it would be almost the same price as a 7 day MYW PH with exp. You're also entitled to join the Disney Dining Experience for $50 and save 20% a the majority of your sit-down meals. As I plan to go down again sometime before the year is out, it will pay for itself.

Re: Annual pass vs. hopper pass

Is it really? I thought the brake even day was supposed to be the 11th day Oh, but I guess with your discount-- I got it (sorry, thinking as I'm typing). I really love the APs, and would get them if they are just a little more. You might decide next year to take another vacation around the same time, so you'd be able as long as its at least a week earlier. I love the discount at the World of Disney Store, plus discounts on DDE, discounts on lunch at restaurants (if you don't get DDE). I like being able to go in the parks every day, rather than worrying about using up one of my days. Plus, it always gives you incentive to squeeze in another trip when you might not otherwise.

Re: Annual pass vs. hopper pass

We decided to go with the hopper when faced with that decision because of the way we tend to do Disney. We're going down in October for 10 days, BUT well only be at the big parks 3 days and also 1 water park. We never get high enough for the break even numbers, and I was afraid to count on the discounts. If the difference is only 8 days and you'll go that many days this year, then I'd definitely get it and enjoy the discounts and the "partial" Disney days that those of us without them usually do not spend. For us the "15 day" pass (10 + 5 Magic Plus) will be used up faster than our passes usually are because of the long trip, but it usually takes us a few years.

HTH and have fun deciding!

Re: Annual pass vs. hopper pass

The break-even point for an AP with a DVC member discount is 7 days MYW, hopper, no-expiration

AP (DVC rate)= 314.18
7day MYW hopper (249.22) plus no expire (58.58) = 307.80

If you're going to visit the WDW parks more than 7 days, an AP is the way to go.

Re: Annual pass vs. hopper pass

I realize the whole break even thing with regard to the MYW tickets is important, but if you're going to get the DDE card, you could possibly come out ahaead a lot sooner than the 7 day mark with an AP. I don't know how much you spend on food at WDW or where you spend it, but most of the sit-down restaurants at the hotels and parks are at a 20% discount with the card. Spending $100/day at theses establishments could save you $140 over a 7 day stay. Subtract the $50 for the cost of the card and you're still $90 ahead. Not to shabby.

If you haven't guessed, that's how I'm justifing an AP for myself this next trip! (And we'll probably spend more than $100/day on those meals! The more I eat, the more I save just sounds wrong though, huh. )

P.S. Lori, I see you live in St. Mary's. My DW grew up in Johnsonburg and she has a sister who lives in Kersey. I've been to that area often!

Be careful! Once you get an AP, you'll want to go to Disney even more! LOL! That's what happened with me!

When I realized the money we would save with an AP: room, food, souveniers - there was no question for us.

That's how I started at Diz9 here on the boards in 2002 and now I'm up to Diz24. That AP just burns a whole in my hand!

I'd go for the annual pass. You're a DVC member, you'll be back next year. The savings is worth it!

You can always try to squeeze in another vacation next year, it's even easier to do that since you have the DVC!
