Being Married to a Handicapped Spouse

When I first met my husband I knew he was special. Alex was born 4 months early, weighing under 2 pounds. Thanks to the neonatal unit at our local hospital here in Rochester, he is healthy as a horse. He has Cerebral Palsy which does not affect his brain or his speech; only his legs. Everywhere we go he travels via scooter/ECV.

When we went to Disney on our honeymoon in 2004, he was treating like a king, as well as me and my parents who were traveling with him. We did feel guilty that we all went through the handicapped entrances, but the CMs assured us just with a smile. We are planning another trip for May, 2010.

As for myself, it is very therapeutic for me to take care of a handicapped. I myself have a neurological disorder, and because of a recent car accident, the doctor suspects it has gotten a little worse. When I went to Disney at Easter in 1998 it was a nightmare. Unfortunately I did not know about the GAC at the time but you better believe I'll be getting one when I go back. We stood in line for Splash Mountain for over half hour with a 1hr 45 min wait. With the huge crowds hovering over us, I started having convulsions and actually passed out. I was brought to First Aid then I ate some lunch. At Peter Pan, again because the line was so long, waiting in line, I passed out again, and I was sitting in a wheelchair!!

Thank Heavens for the people on the boards informing me about the GAC and how it would work in my case!!
