Renting Wheelchairs Directly from Disney

I checked the ECV/Wheelchair sticky thread but didn't really see an answer to my questions. Please let me know if I did anything wrong by starting a new thread.

In my PassPorter it says you can rent wheelchairs from Disney for the length of your stay for about $8 a day. My question is, has anyone ever done this and where do you go to rent them? Since we're staying at Pop Century, I'm not sure if there's a guest services desk there and if that's where we should go if it is. I also know you can rent them at guest services at the parks, but I assumed those were just for the day and couldn't leave site. Am I wrong?

We aren't planning on renting a chair before we leave because there's a good possibility it won't be needed and we don't want to waste the money if that's the case. At the same time, having read that Disney will rent one to you for the length of your stay is also a bit of a relief, just in case we do need it.

Can anyone clear up my confusion?

-Joie

Hi there! Your question is fine, and I'm glad you asked!

I've never rented wheels, but there is definitely a Concierge desk in the main lobby where I am sure you can find help.

Best bet, though, would be to call and make sure you have what you need before you get there. Also, Pop Century does have wheelchair-accessible rooms, so be sure you let them know if you need one.

I'm certain someone will answer the rest of your question soon!

Hope you have a magical time!

We found out the hard way, but if your DS breaks both ankles at the resort and they may be at fault, they provide you with one for your whole trip - "Free of Charge".

Thank you for your concerns, my DS was doing something extemely boy like and foolish, so fault was somewhat his and somewhat on the resort. In the end, there should have been CM's to not allow him into a private party and him being 14 (and oblivious) was "invited" by a few guests (Adults) that said hey you can join us. So, to make a long story short, I never wanted to "Cash In" because I am a firm believer in responsibility for ones own actions. But they did insist on making the rest of our stay comfy and were very hospitible, paid for medical bills and we left it at that.
AND DS LEARNED VALUABLE LESSONS.

I'm not totally sure the Length of Stay option is available any more because it is no longer listed on the Disney website.
At any rate, Length of Stay is not exactly what it sounds like it would be.
What they are talking about is the park rental wheelchairs and it's just for use in the parks. You basically decided how many days you would want to wheelchair and then paid for it ahead of time. The advantage was that you would not have to stand in line to pay for a wheelchair each day. And, you got a $2 a day discount.
This is what the 1st Passporter book for special needs had to say about it:
Quote:
You also have an option of renting a stroller, wheelchair or ECV for multiple days - Disney calls it a "Length of Stay Rental". You'll pay once for as many days as you want, plus you'll get a small (10%) discount. Then, when you return the next day, just show your receipt to the cast member and you'll be shown through the queue with little or no wait. The "Length of Stay" rentals do not guarantee a stroller, wheelchair or ECV.
Resorts do sometimes have wheelchairs that can be loaned, but they are more meant for situations like Ruth Andre's unfortunate experience. The official Disney site says this about wheelchairs at the resort:
Quote:
Wheelchairs are available in limited numbers for Walt Disney WorldŽ Resort Guests at each Resort. Contact Guest Services or the Front Desk for assistance. A $315 deposit will be held on the Guest room account charged only if the wheelchair is not returned. Guests wishing to guarantee the use of a wheelchair throughout their stay should contact local area rental companies to make arrangements.
Mobility Disabilities | Plain Text | Walt Disney World Resort | Walt Disney World Resort

If you want to rent a wheelchair from an off-site company, you can either take contact information with you in case you need it, or you can ask the Concierge to call one of the companies for you.

Thanks for all of the information (and sorry to hear about your son, Ruth Andre!). I think we're going to hold off on renting anything before we get to site and will instead have the kind people at Pop call a vendor for us should we find out we need a wheelchair during the trip. I haven't had any pain in my knee for a couple of weeks now, so I'm really hoping its totally healed. As for mom, she's feeling a lot better and will hopefully be back to normal by the 14th. If we can make it through the trip without one, that would be wonderful, but its nice to know we've got options otherwise.

Oh my goodness! That's quite an experience to have while on vacation. And one I'm sure that your DS and you would much rather not had to experience.

Like Sue said, the length of stay is just available for the parks. The same way the stroller length of stay option was (if it's still available). You can only use their strollers in the parks. Which is one of the main reasons we opted to bring our own from home so we could use it at Sea World and Downtown Disney.

Sounds like a plan.

Did we answer your question so you feel prepared enough?
