We will be going to WDW the end of September and really excited but I'm already fretting about whether to rent a scooter or not. I have a problem with lots of walking with my legs and back. I can do some walking, but after extended periods I'm in severe pain and it usually takes a day or 2 for my body to recover. (We are staying for 8 days.) I also don't want to feel guilty as I don't have an actual disability like many others. I just don't know if I should rent a scooter or not. Any input from others would be greatly appreciated.
I would rent one. we just got back Friday and I am kicking myself for not getting one.
I had surgery on my foot at the beginning of the year and its still not right. But I was being stubborn and thought I could handle it,I ended up leaving the family at the parks and going back to the resort early to rest. And now the foot is worse then before we went.
I wouldn't feel guilty about getting a scooter. Disney is very disabled friendly that most lines nowadays are wide enough for the scooters to navigate. Those that aren't, the CM's will tell you where to go to wait.
If you feel that the scooter would make it easier and more pain-free for you to keep up with your family, get one! If you don't feel you need it full-time, but just to cover longer distances, you can ride and park in each area and do the rides near-by without it. Don't over-do the walking and standing, though.... you know what you can handle.
You don't need to have a diagnosed disability to rent a scooter. If it will keep you more comfortable and prevent the pain, then by all means you should rent the scooter! Don't worry about what others think, you aren't likely to see those people ever again anyway. Most lines are mainstreamed, where they aren't the CMs will direct you accordingly. If you are feeling well and want to walk (and keep from getting stiff from sitting on the scooter) - park it for a bit and walk.
1 day at WDW is a lot of walking, multiply that by 8; so unless you want to spend at least half your vacation resting in your resort and missing the fun, get the scooter and have a great vacation!

Hi welcome to the boards; you've joined an awesome family.
Mericam, rent a scooter without blinking an eye. Please, please don't let pride stop you, because once you hurt it will take days to recover. You can drive to the rides and get off and walk through if you want. Trust me you have a disability even though you don't have a disability tag. I had the same issues of guilt and not saying I had a disability.
I would rent a scooter. I rented one for our 2010 trip because I had my leg in an air cast and that scooter was a life saver. I could have hobbled around the park on my cast or with crutches but why exhaust myself on a daily basis when it was easier for me, given my cast, to use a scooter. I would recommend renting one from an offsite company like Walker Mobility that way it will be ready and waiting for you when you arrive at your resort and you will always have access to it. It can be difficult to get them at the park sometimes, especially if you park hop.
Also, feel free to park it somewhere and then walk around. I would do this on occasion just so I could get out of the chair for a while.
You might also want to consider getting a Guest Assistance Card as your issue is not something that is easily visible, like my cast was. It will give you that added bit of assistance when and if you need it.
If you decide to go with the scooter, ask for a length of stay pass. It is slightly discounted. My mom uses a wheelchair and we always get one. You just save your receipt and show it when you go to the rental area. If you only decide to rent the scooter some of the time, you only have to pay once per day. You show your receipt at the next park and they send you off with your chair/scooter.
Rent from off site such as Randy's Mobility. One week is around $210 depending on weight of person and amenities. He fixed my scooter yesterday for free but I had to drive down to Lake Wales.
Typical day for a guest without a car.
Walk to bus or monorail
stand around waiting for bus or monorail
riding to park
walkin to security and waiting to get through security
walking to gates and waiting to get through
walking to a sitting spot until family gets you a scooter.
with a car
walk to car
ride to park
walk to ferry or monorail at MK or walk to tram at other parks or walk to security at other parks
waiting to get through security
walking to gates and waiting to get through
walking to a sitting spot until family gets you a scooter.
I can load my scooter in my Nissan Sentra or the rental Elantra with ease. I unload and scoot right into security and then the parks without pain. At the hotels I was loaded first onto buses and monorails. When I feel like walking I can park the scooter. They are lightweight and easy to maneuver unlike the behemoths in the park. I have been going to Disneyland since October, 1960 and have used scooters since 1998 at SeaWorld, WDW, DLR, and LegoLand Florida to name a few spots. I know from experience how much scooters can improve your life at a park. Sometimes you can get them free from the VA and various government agencies, not sure which. Randy does sales through VA programs and other companies also can help you look into getting a free one maybe.

Mom calls to check on me and reminded me to pay the gardener. I love her so much.
Disneyland was fun with flag retreat and pickles. I have a home here, thank you. GAC is NOT a "front of the line pass".
She is gone but keeping signature. Laundry is getting done. My purpose in life is to help poor people in FL. Farewell, will miss you.
Hi and welcome!!
I'd rent the scooter. Something to consider: a typical person visiting one Disney World park for one day walks between 5 and 8 miles. FIVE MILES!! My step-mother thought she could do the parks without the scooter and we let her for the first day. On the second day, she was thankful beyond belief when the scooter guy delivered one for her.
Oh rent that bad boy and don't give it a second thought!! We rented one for Dmom from Walker Mobility and it couldn't have been easier. So easy that DDad said he's getting one next time too
Now you have a good bit of advice of renting a scooter, So go and set up a rental & have no worries While checking out prices give Scootarama a look too, They have excellent service.. I have used them for years.. Shop around, there are lots of choices..
Please rent the scooter. Falling from weakness and/or exhaustion is the worst thing I can think of. It is not only embarrassing, but you can get hurt and possibly need stitches. Why go through all of this?
