Re: WDW Disabilities List

Hi Kristen,

I have a 10YO son with Autism and bi-polar disorder. That makes a very interesting combination. He is high functioning and loves the world. This will be his 1oth trip 8/24 - 8/31.

My wife is a type 2 diabetic with with bi-polar disorder.

My 7yo son seems to be okay and I will not mention myself

BTW, the list is quite impressive.

Re: WDW Disabilities List

I don't know it it counts as a disability, but my DH's flat feet make touring the world very painful.

I have a cousin with 4 kids, 2 of which have Cystic Fibrosis. She is currently trying to see whether she can make a trip to see the mouse while the two with CF are relatively healthy. They have to have breathing treatments every 4 hours, and take tons of meds.

I have another friend who has a baby with Downs Syndrome. Megan is finally off oxygen, so a trip is a lot more feasable for them now.

Does obesity count? Sure makes touring tough.

Re: WDW Disabilities List

My dad and I have epilepsy. It's genetic with our family. While I'm relatively OK, I'm still learning that I can't push myself like I used to (stay up all night, wake up early, drink alcohol, etc). Dad's far worse off, and has very poor balance and severe tremors, but a lot of that is due to lack of exercise and the dilantin that he used to take. So, basically, I have to take good care of myself and remember to take my meds .

Re: WDW Disabilities List

Hey Kristin!
Great thread...it's amazing the amount of challenges each family deals with daily, yet you can't keep us from a trip to see the Mouse!

My 2 sons (ages 16 & 12) have a genetic disorder called Sanfilippo Syndrome (MPS IIIB). It causes metal retardation, hyperactivity and sleep disruption. They are both non-verbal with mental age of between 18 months-3 years. Waiting in lines for anything is really hard for them.

Disney trips are enjoyed by our whole family, but the boys especially enjoy the entertainment...shows, parades and character greetings.

Re: WDW Disabilities List

This is a really inspiring thread, guys! Just goes to show what a wonderful place WDW is for people with challenges. We have a fibromyalgia checking in here! My mom hasn't been "formally" diagnosed and has been told for years that her pain is in her head, but after reading books and researching her condition, we've ascertained it is indeed fibromyalgia. Now we need a doctor who will believe her!

Re: WDW Disabilities List

Reading through this list makes me feel very lucky; we only have two of these:

DS has ADHD, controlled with medication.

DH has sleep apnea, controlled with CPAP machine (yay!)

As I said, we're lucky!

Re: WDW Disabilities List

We have toured the world twice and are planning our third trip as a family (my 28th ). DD, who is 5, is classified as #7 on the list, that of developementaly delayed. We are very blessed that she loves Disney and requires little to no special treatment (other than from us) on our trips. On our last trip we were amazed to see alot of progress in her, and while her speech is very delayed, we heard new words emerge everyday.
There is a great article in this weeks edition of the mousears newsletter from the parent of an autistic child. I hope everyone who has a child with atusim or developement delay will take the time to read it. It is wonderful what Disney will do for people of all ages who face the challenges of a disability.
