Re: WDW Disabilities List

I have:
Meniere's Disease (inner ear disorder)
Otosclerosis (causes conductive hearing loss)
Dysthimia (cronic depression)

My dad has Manic Depression
My sister has Asthma
Mom has Type 2 Diabetes

We all enjoy Disney World very much...my sister enjoys it so much she moved to Kissimmee!

I don't know what I would do without my trips to WDW...these trips keep me sane (literally!)

Re: WDW Disabilities List

[ QUOTE ]
Last May we went DROVE to WDW less than a month after I discovered that I had Degenerative Disc Disease in my neck!! I took it easy the first several days in WDW after experiencing "0" pain (didn't ride ToT, Space Mt., Big Thunder Mt., Test Track, Rock'n Roller Coaster, and Star Tours), but then I started feeling "really brave" and rode on everything except for Space Mt. and Rock'n Roller Coaster pain free!!

[/ QUOTE ]

The same thing happened to me although I don't know if I had quite as bad an injury as you did. In May 2002 less then a week before I was to leave to Florida my back went out. It was the most painful thing that has ever happened to me. I could hardly walk or drive...everything hurt! I was bound and determined to go to Disney. I rode Rock n Roller Coaster because I figured I was already in pain how much worse could it get? *LOL* I rode the coaster and came out feeling better. I think I was so tensed up because of the pain that when I loosen up a bit on the ride the pain subsided...I went home telling everyone that Disney World cured me. I have not had any back pain since!

Re: WDW Disabilities List

We have a son with ADHD, both of us have high blood pressure, and I just recently got my sight back after being legally blind for about 6 months. I still only have 20/80 vision but it's better than it has been!

Re: WDW Disabilities List

My DD(7) has mild cerebral palsy - spastic diplegia to be exact (increased muscle tone in her legs). She was born 3 months early, weighing exactly 2 pounds. Thankfully, she walks unaided, wearing only ankle/foot orthotics with her tennis shoes. She does have a noticeably different gait but can run around WDW with her cousins and on her own just beautifully There's nothing she can't do!!
Oh yeah - and she is the greatest joy of my life

Re: WDW Disabilities List

My oldest son has Down Syndrome, heart defect, Barrett's Esophagus and GI Reflux Disease. His vision is not that great and his hearing is progressively getting worse as he ages. My younger son is Autistic and has numerous food allergies, but is otherwise physically healthy. They both love, love, love WDW and can't wait for our trip at the end of August!1

Re: WDW Disabilities List

I know this may not rank on the list but food allergies are my illness. I always had to explain why I carried Epi-pens.

Also to save time this trip. I purchased a small clear make-up bag for my purse. This way they can see the pens, and in case of emergency they are easy to access.

Re: WDW Disabilities List

Wow, just found this list. I also have PCOS/Syndrome X, which includes obesity, pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, chronic fatigue but my main problem is Fibromyalgia. I am going to be renting a scooter from an outside company for the trip as walking any longer than 1/2 hr causes severe pain in my feet and then I can't walk, literally for at least a day afterwards. Sadly, my "disease" is not visible and I hate the looks of "she doesn't look sick, just fat" for riding in a scooter, as I'm only 38 and don't have any apparent visually need for one.

Glad to see others in my boat as well! - OK, well not glad you all suffer, but glad others understand my feelings about the whole thing.

My fiance said "How in the WORLD are you going to handle all the walking". I finally was brave and introduced him to the idea that I would be renting a scooter. He was surprised by not appalled. I was glad as he's never been with me when I grocery shop and use a cart. Not sure how he'd react!

Re: WDW Disabilities List

Great thread.

Going back to WDW for the first time in 3 years after developing Meniere's disease, which is an inner ear balance disorder. (controlled with a low sodium diet and diuretics)

Also have had Fibromaylgia since I was 18, but that never slowed me down at any of my 7 or so prior trips to Disney

Re: WDW Disabilities List

It's helpful to see there are others who braving Disney. I have Ostitis Pubis (Damage to my pubic bones from last pregnancy after pelvis separated too early). We actually postponed Disney once because of my fear of the pain. I've been prepared for the pain I'll have from this (with the help of anti-inflammatories). However, three weeks ago I had a pedicure and she cut my nails too short (actually cut a few of my toes), and now almost all of my toenails are ingrown (unfortunately my nails have a natural curve that never bothered me before pedicure - and have had many pedicures before this). Yesterday I just had the procedure to remove the sides of my nail on both big toes (and leave for Disney in 32 days), I can't walk right now, so I'm pretty scared.

Both my sons have asthma (one pretty severe), so we're going w/lots of meds and the names of a few good asthma specialists (friends of our doc) in Orlando.
