At the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, Merida will appear in Fairytale Garden in a setting inspired by her Scottish Highlands home, where young guests will be invited to engage in archery lessons and other activities until it’s their turn to meet her. Joining Merida are three mischievous bear cubs, whom you’ll learn more about when you see "Brave" in theaters. To make room for Merida, Rapunzel will be moving from Fairytale Garden April 15, to a new spot at the outskirts of Adventureland, where she will continue to greet her loyal fans and subjects. At Disneyland park in California this summer, Merida and the bears will appear near "it's a small world" in Fantasyland, where guests will also be able to participate in activities inspired by Merida’s story.

CHECK FOR CHARGING WHILE DINING 'Anyone who has a Smart phone knows how quickly you can run out of battery life. Whenever I leave my resort in the morning I take my charger with me. Anytime I am in a restaurant I always plug in my phone. It usually charges the battery enough to get me through the rest of the day. Also, take a charger for each Smart phone in your party with you so you can all charge your phone while enjoying your meal.' -- contributed by Theresa

LIGHTEN LAUNDRY LOADS 'If you anticipate having to do laundry during your Disney vacation or cruise then pack some of the detergent/fabric softener combo packs to save some money and not have to buy anything while "in the Disney bubble." This also allows you to pack lighter and maybe not have to check any bags, which in turns also saves money!' -- contributed by Barb

TSA TRAVEL TIPS 'If you are traveling with children, it is a good idea to send one adult from your group through airport security/customs first, then all children, followed by the second adult. This is a good idea even for older children and small family groups. That way if your child is selected for additional screening, there is a parent on either end of the security screening. We are a family of three that was traveling to Vancouver from the east coast of the U.S. for a Disney Cruise. We found that our 10 year old son was selected for additional screening every single time we passed through a security checkpoint. The first time this happened, he was the last one to walk through the scanners and he felt a bit apprehensive when he was held back while we were already through. We were allowed to go to the screening area with him, but that bit of anxiety was easily avoided. We had him pass through security between us the remainder of the trip and we all felt more comfortable about the process.' -- contributed by Holly

Dave
teachuni2000 asks: "We are not staying on property (Orange Lake), and I'm wondering if we would be better off ordering from garden grocer, which seems to be popular, or if we would be better off stopping at Sam's Club or Walmart on our way from the airport. Right now there will be 10 in our group (4 adults and 6 kids 11 months-14), with two rental cars. We are not sure which airport we will be using Sanford or MCO, it will depend on prices. I like to plan WAAAAAYYYY ahead, and others we are traveling with tend to be more spur of the moment.... with this in mind I'm thinking the mommies stopping and buying food might work, but the convenience of having it there when we arrive sounds good too. Any advice??"
Dave Marx answers: "With a group your size, there should be no problem meeting Garden Grocer's minimum order, so it's really going to come down to time and convenience. How much vacation time do you want to spend at the grocery store vs. how much time do you want to spend in advance of vacation putting the order together. If everyone's itching to hit the ground running and head to the parks, I'd lean towards Garden Grocer. Other families go a lot slower when renting/visiting a vacation home - time to relax and get settled, etc. - for veteran vacation home users, it can become a ritual that's part of the experience - some go shopping while other members of the family unpack, the kids hit the pool, etc. After that, it's the intangibles - hands-on shopping, jumping on in-store specials (though Garden Grocer also offers specials), impulse purchases, etc."

Feature:
Teppan Edo: Disney Dining Review Cheryl Pendry, PassPorter Featured Columnist
Everyone has their favorite places to eat at Walt Disney World, and we’re no exception to that rule. Ours is Teppan Edo at Epcot.
We discovered Teppan Edo, as it's now called, many years ago, on one of our first visits to Walt Disney World as a couple, and we were hooked on it immediately. Back then, it was called Teppanyaki, but after a name change, and some cosmetic changes to the decor, it emerged as Teppan Edo. Thank goodness the changes didn't have any impact on the food or entertainment, both of which we always find to be excellent.
I'll say now that part of the attraction of Teppan Edo for us is that there's nothing similar where we live. I know that, for a lot of people, teppanyaki-style dining is something can easily be found close to their homes, so finding it at Walt Disney World isn't that exciting, but not us.
For those who haven't experienced teppanyaki-style dining, essentially your meal is cooked in front of you by a chef on a boiling hot teppan griddle, hence the name. At Teppan Edo, there are eight seats at a huge table, surrounding the griddle on three sides, with the chef on the fourth side. That means that, if you're in a group of less than eight people, then you'll be seated with other people. That’s never been an issue for us, and we've met some wonderful people over the years, and had a lot of fun with them.
The fact that your food is cooked right in front of you is only half the fun, as the chefs always put on a wonderful show for their guests. It's impossible to know what they'll do, but over the years we'e seen a steaming "Mount Fuji," made out of a set of onion rings, and a hidden Mickey. You may even get to see a choo choo train! The chefs are exceptionally inventive, and even when you don't have kids on your table, they're still there to entertain.
Because of the style of cooking, it’s worth knowing that everything is cooked on the same grill, and that could be an issue if you have allergies. Be sure to advise Disney beforehand, when you make your Advanced Dining Reservation, and again when you arrive, if there are any such issues. Equally, vegetarians take note – you may see meat being cooked in front of you. I don’t eat meat, and that’s taken some getting used to over the years.
So what’s the food like? Well, one simple answer I could give is “excellent,” but I’m sure you’d prefer me to elaborate on that, and justify my beliefs! All menus are subject to change at any time, but appetizers here usually include some Japanese traditions, like the miso soup, a traditional soybean paste soup, which we always order, along with assorted tempura (deep-fried seafood, meats, and/or veggies), and we’ve been impressed with this in the past.
Of course, there’s also a selection of sushi, including some samplers, if you’re not sure of what you like. There’s the old favorite the California roll, made up of avocado, cucumber, crab, mayonnaise, seaweed, and sushi rice. It’s not an expansive choice, but if you’re looking for sushi, you may be better off at the neighbouring Tokyo Dining. If the choices sound too exotic for you, then you may find a garden salad on the menu, which comes with your choice of original ginger dressing or creamy sesame dressing.
When it comes to entrees, everything is served with seasonal vegetables with udon noodles, and steamed white rice. Again, the menu can change from time to time, but you’ll always find some meat, and fish, along with yasi, the fresh seasonal vegetables. There’s plenty on offer for non-meat eaters, and last time we visited, I tried the swordfish steak, and was very impressed, both with the way it was cooked, and the size of the thing! Other options may include sea scallops, and shrimp. Meat eaters will find plenty too, usually filet mignon, sirloin steak, pork loin steak, and chicken breast are on the menu.
There are also combination entrees: Nihonbashi - sirloin steak and chicken breast; Asakusa - sirloin steak and large shrimp; and Ueno - chicken breast and large shrimp. I’m sure that they used to do a fish combination entree, but sadly that’s gone from the menu for now. The names of the combination entrees, by the way, are all neighborhoods of Tokyo, which I think is a lovely touch.
Kids won’t go hungry here, with a choice of either chicken breast, large shrimp, or fresh seasonal vegetables.
Sadly, we usually tend to find after we’ve finished our entree we’re too full for much else, but I have tried the ice cream, although I’ve never been brave enough to try the more exotic Japanese flavors. I guess I’m just a traditionalist when it comes to my desserts! Green tea pudding, and chocolate ginger cake may be other offerings on the menu. For us, this is one of those restaurants that sums up the essence of Epcot. It transports you to a far away place, allows you to experience cuisine you may not usually get at home (certainly in our case!) and, even better, it also adds in an element of fun, making this a great choice for all age groups. Is it any wonder we keep going back every time we visit Walt Disney World?

Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport: A Hotel Review Mary Augustine, PassPorter Guest Contributor
When sailing with Mickey Mouse from Port Canaveral, we've stayed at a nearby Port Canaveral hotel, in Orlando, and at a Walt Disney World Resort. Recently, we spent that highly anticipated night before the cruise at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando International Airport.
It was a wonderful experience! The convenience, amenities, and ambiance were the perfect beginning to our Disney Cruise Line vacation. This will be our taking off point for future Disney Cruise Line vacations departing from Port Canaveral. Why? Read on.
The Hyatt Regency is located in Orlando International Airport, and can be accessed via elevators, stairs, or escalators from the main lobby of the terminal building. It couldn’t be more convenient! The most obvious reason to select the hotel is the convenience of leaving your tagged cruise baggage in your room, where it is picked up, delivered to Port Canaveral, and then to your Disney Cruise Line stateroom, all without your hoisting even one bag. In addition, you are able to check in at the Disney Cruise Line desk at the airport (level 1, side B, adjacent to the Disney Magical Express check-in area) early enough to receive a boarding pass with the number 2 on it! Of course, this applies only if you are taking Disney Cruise Line transportation to the port. We checked in with Disney at about 8:30 am, received our boarding number and Key to the World cards, and then had a quick breakfast while waiting for the first Disney Cruise Line bus to board for Port Canaveral.
Even without this amazing perk, the Hyatt Orlando International Airport has much to offer: comfortable beds with luxury bedding, terminal or runway views with balcony, spacious rooms, a heated outdoor pool with waterfall and sundeck, free WiFi (airport provided), iHome alarm clock/charger/radio, comfortable sitting areas in public spaces, two restaurants, and online check-in. The fitness center is open 24/7, and was well equipped, including Life Fitness™ Cardio machines, treadmills, elliptical cross training bicycles, exercise balls, and free weights. The fitness center also offers some nice extras such as cold water, chilled towels, and headphones. I wish I could say that I had a great workout there, but I must admit we went shopping instead! The airport shops and restaurants are just steps away, and did I mention that the Orlando International Airport has not just one, but two Disney Stores?
We had a delightful dinner at McCoy's Bar and Grill, an informal restaurant located on the lobby level. They serve sandwiches, brick oven pizzas, salads, and soups, as well as small plates (wraps, lemon hummus, bacon wrapped scallops, fried calamari, shrimp cocktail, pot stickers, soft pretzels with white cheddar-gouda cheese, emparedado de platano y pollo, and more). I can recommend the arugula salad with Bosc pear and shaved Reggiano, as well as the Mediterranean flat bread, topped with Kalamata olives, tomatoes and arugula. Within McCoy's Bar and Grill is a sushi bar, Hiro’s Sushi. Another dining option is the more formal Hemisphere restaurant, which offers steak, seafood, and panoramic views from the ninth floor of the Hyatt. Lobby South, a bar on the lobby level, features appetizers, along with cocktails, in the late afternoon and evening. Sushi can be ordered at the Lobby bar as well. It was very popular the evening we stayed at this Hyatt!
One important consideration when booking accommodations at the Hyatt Orlando International Airport is the cost. Standard rates are upwards of $300 per night or more. There are several ways to get a significantly lower rate. Discounts that may be available include military/government rates, AAA discounts, senior rates, and corporate rates - some offering rooms at just over $100 for a double. Rooms can be booked up to one year in advance. I found that our discounted rate was readily available when booked at the one year window, but had difficulty obtaining it at 2-3 months out. Perseverance paid off, and a discounted rate appeared on the Hyatt website about one month prior to our most recent stay. Another option is to purchase Hyatt Stay Certificates (Choice level), available on the Hyatt website. However, it is necessary to confirm that the Stay Certificates are accepted on the date(s) of your stay. Some have reported acquiring last minute discounts via the Hotwire or Last Minute Travel websites, but alas, for us, waiting until 24-48 hours prior to travel to secure a hotel room is not a comfortable option, particularly when the hotel night precedes a vacation as expensive and anticipated as a Disney cruise!
If you have two or more days prior to your cruise, you may prefer lodging at Walt Disney World, Port Canaveral, or other nearby Florida destinations. But if you are arriving in Orlando the day or evening prior to a Disney Cruise Line voyage from Port Canaveral, and using Disney Cruise Line transportation to the port, the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport offers a luxurious and relaxing beginning to a Disney Cruise Line vacation. Bon voyage!
